Elephants, Serpents, and Fish

The elephant disease , also called elephantiasis tropica or lymphatic filariasis , is a chronic disease seen in tropical areas in which the patient’s lymphatic channels become blocked by infection with mosquito-borne parasitic roundworms. In time the extremities, especially the legs and feet, come to resemble those of elephants (Fig. 6.6). The genitalia may be involved. Most common in Africa and Asia, more than 100 million persons worldwide are infected with the disease.
